Kinfolk’s first foray in to outer wear was an MA-1, or as it is more commonly known, a “flight jacket.” The release of that Ashland MA-1, with industry standard Alpha Industries body and an original graphic from Brooklyn custom tattooer and Kinfolk barista Thomas Gastelum, was one of our proudest moments. So much so in fact that nearly everyone on staff owns at least one. That might not be possible with our latest release but only because of a much more limited availability.

For winter 2014, Kinfolk is proud to announce the the Kinfolk x Brown’s Beach MA-1. Brown’s Beach jacket company and it’s original fabric was established in the beginning of the 20th century in Worcester, Massachusetts before recently finding a new home and Renaissance out of Tokyo, Japan. Kinfolk label creative director Jey Perie was introduced to the brand by a close friend Stephane Muller several years ago, when Muller began consulting for them. Of the eventual Kinfolk and Brown’s Beach collaboration, Perie says, “I wanted to create, with the design team at Brown’s Beach, a contemporary silhouette without betraying the original purpose and aesthetic of the label. The shoulder structure, classic color way and high-end finish provide the perfect balance to our inclinations of modern fit, comfort and functionality.”

Brown’s Beach fabric, a unique wool-cotton blend, was developed in 1901 for general outdoor use. This hard wearing, water repellent, slightly elasticized fabric was sewn up into simple vests and jacket styles which are still being made today. “Brown’s Beach specializes in traditional workwear and is known for classic silhouettes like their lapel jacket and shawl collar jackets, both of which we also carry at The Kinfolk store,” says Perie.” I suggested to Brown’s Beach to work with us on an MA-1 silhouette that could be classic and at the same time appeal to a more fashion forward crowd here in the US.
