Matt Wright has been painting, building and hanging signs in New York since 1996. He has worked with hand-painting advertising company Colossal Media since its inception and has collaborated on several public art projects, including the Coney Island Dreamland Artist Club (2003) and Love Letter to Brooklyn (2011).
Wright’s work draws on the vocabulary of paper grocery signs, his pieces done quickly on paper, aluminum and other readily available media using enamel poster paint. For Pounce Pattern, Wright uses pounce paper and charcoal, some of the most important yet unseen materials utilized in the large scale hand-painted wall advertising to which he regularly contributes. Each edition of Pounce Pattern is hand-painted by Wright, with a maximum of 50 to be produced, total.
